Beyond the classroom
Choir, concert band + brass
To complement our Performing Arts program, students have the opportunity to participate in choir, concert band and brass programs.
Choir
Our school choir is open to all students in Years 4 – 6 who would like to experience the joy of group singing. In choir, students develop their listening skills enabling them to sing in time with each other. They create harmonies, learn about simple and complex rhythms, and develop an understanding of the subtleties of music and how to sing differently to suit a particular style.
Concert Band
Our school concert band is open to all students in Years 3 – 6 who learn an instrument, have played for more than one year, and are currently receiving tuition on their instrument. In being a member of the band, students develop an understanding of what it means to perform as a group to create harmonious sound, and how they can play to suit a particular style. Our concert band comprises of students who play the violin, recorder, flute, drums, keyboard, trumpet, trombone and percussion instruments.
Brass
Brass instrument tuition is offered to Years 4 – 6 students. Since 2016, we have partnered with Thornbury High School, where their music teachers provide fortnightly trumpet and trombone lessons to our students, allowing us to develop our brass program. This collaboration, where instruments are supplied and tuition is free, is a wonderful addition to our musical offerings. As well as learning to play an instrument, students develop an understanding of rhythm, pitch, tempo, musical notation and playing in time with others.
Performance opportunities
Our choir, concert band and brass students have the opportunity to perform at school events like Art For All, school assemblies, and the end of year festive concert.
Through our partnership with Thornbury High School, our concert band and brass performs with their orchestra in a high school concert, while our choir has the opportunity to contribute to their bi-annual musical productions.
