L.O.T.E.
At Fairfield we offer Greek as the Language Other than English.
Our program has been established since 1993 and our students in Year 1 to 6 receive a lesson of one hour per week.
Students in Year 1/2 are looking at the Greek alphabet and learning the names of animals that match the letters. They are progressively adding to their repertoire of simple songs, colours and numbers.
In the upper grades, 3-6, we concentrate on learning useful expressions when introducing ourselves in Greek.
We also learn useful words and phrases, numbers, colours, some geography, some history and we note the similarities and differences between the Greek culture and other cultures as far as Easter, Christmas, family celebrations are concerned. This year we will concentrate on on topics that interest the students, e.g. themselves, their facial features, parts of their body, their families and friends, food, clothing, school, sport and games and celebrations.
In Year 3/4 we will learn about the ancient Greek gods and goddesses the planets in our solar system were named after.
We will also look at Greece, pretending to go on a trip, visiting main cities, famous ancient Greeks sites, some islands and discuss the influence of Greek on the western culture.
Cooking, some dancing, singing, quizzing, projects, mythology favoured by the students are going to be incorporated in our program through the coming year.
The teacher, Niki Vlachos, or Kyria Vlachou, is assisted by Anthi Baltatzis on Tuesdays and Kosta Tzortzis on Thursdays. They are seconded teachers from Greece and are funded by the Greek Consulate in Melbourne. They provide assistance to students from a Greek background.
