Year 5/6
Leadership
We take our roles and responsibilities very seriously at Fairfield PS. In the Grade 5/6 area we have lots of different ways in which we can develop our leadership skills.
House Captains & Vice-Captains
Our school is divided into four houses (Merri, Diamond, Yarra and Darebin) and each house has elections for Captains and Vice-Captains. We need to make a speech to present in front of our house members and then we have an election for these positions.
Junior School Council
We also have a Junior School Council. Each class elects 2 students to represent it on the JSC. The Council holds regular meetings to discuss issues that occur in the school.
This year our 5/6 JSC representatives went to a Youth Leadership conference at Vodaphone Arena where they learned about the qualities of a good leader and how it is important to try to help other people.
Buddy Program
The 5/6 students are also buddies to our Prep students. We meet regularly with our Prep buddies to help them adjust to life at school.
At the end of Term 1, we hold a Teddy Bear picnic to celebrate our buddies' first successful term at school. Everyone benefits from our Buddy program.
Interschool Sport
In Terms 1, 2 and 4, on Fridays we play sport against teams from other schools. Our sport coaches are Mr Plozza, Ms Wong, Ms Walker, David, and Rali. If we are not in a sport team we do physical activities that help us to keep fit and prepare us for these teams. We play against a number of different schools in pour district, including Wales Street PS, Penders Grove PS, Westgarth PS, Holy Spirit PS, St Mary's PS, Bell PS, Northcote PS and Preston South PS.
We also participate in other sports activities such as the basketball round robin, golf, tennis, triathlon, athletics, football trials, etc.
Summer Sports
In summer (Terms 1 and 4) - the sports we play are Bat Tennis, Rounders, Softball and Cricket.
Winter Sports
In winter (Term 2) - we play Soccer, Football, Netball and Newcombe.
Term 3 - Inter School Athletics (Collingwood Harriers track).
