Year 3/4

Grade 3/4 - Girls

English

In English the 3/4s read both for pleasure and to find information on a range of topics.

We read serial novels (such as Storm Boy by Colin Thiele and Jeff Brown’s Flat Stanley series), plays, poems, short stories, articles and informative texts related to our Integrated Curriculum units.

The 3/4s enjoy learning how to write narratives, poems, newspaper articles, book reports, excursion recounts and information reports. We use a variety of learning and teaching strategies (such as word walls, thinking charts, and planning tools) to help students develop sound writing skills.

Mathematics

Grade 3/4 - Boys

Students learn how to apply mathematics to their everyday lives, such as when shopping, telling the time, reading maps and using timetables. Students begin to use formal units when measuring and they explore shapes and solids according to their key features. They conduct experiments and collect data to construct simple graphs.

In Number, the 3/4 students develop and extend their mental computation strategies. They solve number problems using the four operations and explore place value and the order of numbers from hundredths to tens of thousands.

A range of tools are used for mathematical work, including calculators and measuring equipment.

Integrated Curriculum

Each term, the 3/4 area focuses on an Integrated Unit that explores an area of the VELS Curriculum. Topics in 2007 include Environmental Studies, Spinning in Space, Aboriginal Studies and Plants in Action.

These topics are taught both as individual sessions and as part of our English or Mathematics program. Students use a variety of learning styles and thinking tools to assist them in their learning.
