Year 1/2
Literacy
Our literacy program is divided into three areas: writing, reading, and speaking and listening. Where possible, it is linked with our Integrated Curriculum topics which allows the students to explore areas such as text types in a meaningful setting. For example, this year, students wrote a report on a sea creature in our topic on the sea, and e-mailed friends and wrote letters to their families in our topic on communication.
Numeracy
In the 1/2 area, we have a "hands on" approach to mathematics. The students explore and develop skills in the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), counting, place value, space, basic fractions, money, measurement and problem solving. They do this through games, manipulating concrete materials, learning journals, self reflection and discussions. Our aim is to make the mathematics hour an enjoyable one where students learn to make connections with and apply mathematics in their everyday lives.
Integrated Curriculum
"Integrated Curriculum" refers to the way in which we teach areas outside of literacy and numeracy. Where possible, we also integrate literacy and numeracy in our integrated units of work.
Each term, the 1/2 area has an Integrated Curriculum topic that will focus on a number of VELS domains e.g. Science, Humanities, Geography, Health, Interpersonal Development, Civics and Citizenship, Communication, Technology, Design or Thinking Processes.
Bounce Back
Bounce Back is an integral part of the whole school program. It encourages student resiliency, that is, the capacity to "bounce back" after encountering problems, difficulties and down times.
In the 1/2 area one hour a week is dedicated to facilitating a Bounce Back lesson; however, it is very much a part of our overall teaching program.
Over the year, students will be involved in discussions, art activities, drama, songs and other activities that will cover the following areas:
- Core Values - Honesty, Fairness, Responsibility, Supporting Others, Co-operation, Accepting Difference, Respect and Being Friendly.
- Elasticity
- People Bouncing Back
- Courage
- The Bright Side
- Emotions
- Relationships
- Humour
- Bullying
- Success
Our students also learn to use the language of "Bounce Back" to communicate with their peers, teachers and families.
